The concept car "EDAG Light Cocoon" was recently awarded the famous Red Dot Award 2016 at a presentation ceremony in Singapore. The "Red Dot: Best of the Best" award pays tribute to top design quality that demonstrates outstanding innovation in both form and function.

The combination of bionic design and sophisticated lighting concept capable of back-lighting the vehicle's outer skin in a wide variety of different colours won over the inter-national Red Dot jury. However, the concept car created by EDAG Engineering GmbH, a leading engineering partner to the automotive industry, stands for far more than just smart automobile design. "The reason we used a printed skeleton structure was to demonstrate what intelligent future lightweight design might look like," explained ED-AG's Chief Designer Johannes Barckmann. "Nature has her own strategy for lightweight design: material is only put to use where it is absolutely essential for stability." The addi-tively manufactured skeleton structure was covered with a protective outer skin made of textile fabric, to make the innovative body concept visible.

The EDAG Light Cocoon made its debut at the Geneva Motor Show in 2015, and since then has attracted worldwide attention throughout the automotive industry. As a result of the increasing importance of electric mobility, the industry is after all working on extremely lightweight body concepts which will help to save resources and further extend the range of electric vehicles.

"We are proud of the fact that the independent Red Dot jury has decided to reward our combination of design and innovation," affirmed Barckmann.

Every year, the jury selects the best product and concept designs from some 5,000 entries from more than 50 countries, making Red Dot Award one of the major international product competitions in the world.
