Topic overview
Why we promote intelligent urban and regional development
- Water supply
- With regional heatwaves and droughts, 2022 was the second warmest year in Europe since records began.
- 2024 is the first year since records began in which it is on average 1.5°C warmer than the pre-industrial mean, making it also the warmest year so far.
- Traffic congestion
- At peak times, significant traffic problems and interruptions occur on almost 40% of the roads.
- Intense heavy rain
- An increase in the frequency of heavy rainfall events in Germany meant that in 2023 it rained more than at any time in the previous 16 years.
- In 2024, Germany experienced the wettest 12-month period since records began.
- Particulate matter pollution
- With around 13.1 micrograms of particulate matter, Berlin is the worst offender in Germany.
- Overcrowded parking lots
- On average, German drivers spend around 41 hours a year looking for a parking space.
- Medical care
- In urban areas, a doctor looks after an average of 127 inhabitants, while in rural federal states the ratio is significantly higher, with 231 and 216 inhabitants per doctor respectively.

Data strategy
Data is the backbone of modern cities and is key to making smart solutions efficient and sustainable. A well-thought-out data strategy helps municipalities to collect important data for process optimization, but also to structure and use growing amounts of data in a targeted manner.

Use case consulting
Targeted and practical applications are the basis for a successful smart city or smart region. With our use case consulting, we help you analyze the specific challenges of your community and develop innovative solutions.
IoT and data infrastructure
A modern IoT and data infrastructure is the backbone for the digital transformation of cities and regions. It not only enables the networking of sensors and devices, but also creates the basis for future-oriented technologies such as digital twins, AI-supported analyses and the urban metaverse.

Use case implementation
Targeted and practical use cases are the basis for a successful smart city or smart region. We support you in addressing the specific challenges of your community and implementing innovative solutions when executing use cases.
Hosting, service & operations
A high-performance digital infrastructure is only as good as its operation and continuous maintenance. With our hosting, service and support solutions, we ensure that your smart city technologies remain operational around the clock.

Training & development
The sustainable success of a smart city depends on the technologies used being able to be used optimally. With our training and development programs, we prepare your team to work with the solutions and systems we have developed – from IoT sensors, data infrastructure and digital twins to hosting and support.
Use cases
Heavy rain early warning system
With our heavy rain early warning system, precipitation, water levels and runoff behavior in the canals can be monitored in real time so that citizens can be protected or evacuated in good time before extreme weather events occur. By combining this data with information from the German Weather Service and the heavy rain hazard map, reliable data can be determined, which is immediately stored and analyzed in the cloud. If a critical value is exceeded, citizens, rescue services and relevant authorities are alerted.
- Our focus areas
- Real-time measurements and immediate alerts when critical values are exceeded
- Data analysis and storage of data in cloud systems.
- Your benefits
- Proactive response options for extreme weather events.
- Timely initiation of protective measures and evacuations.

Smart Water Management
Thanks to our smart water management, general water consumption can be reduced, the loss of trees and plants can be avoided and general operating costs can be optimized.
- Our focus areas
- Efficient and sustainable water use based on an irrigation system that combines the latest technologies and data-based solutions.
- Real-time measurements that provide a clear overview of water demand by showing water availability and current water losses.
- Structured water supply for trees and plants.
- The collection of excess water in artificial storage such as lakes, ponds, cisterns and tree trenches during heavy rainfall events.
- Your benefits
- Dynamic and economical planning of irrigation routes to reduce CO₂ emissions.
- Healthy green spaces that optimize air quality and also provide natural shade and cooling.
- Efficient and demand-oriented irrigation planning that eliminates unnecessary irrigation, which in turn allows for improved staff deployment.
- Reduced water consumption and consequently lower financial burdens for municipalities.
Innovative traffic management
With smart traffic management, we optimize traffic flows by reducing and resolving congestion and disruptions in the transportation system. The EDAG Group relies on various sensor and system data and analyzes them to better understand traffic and make informed decisions.

Smart City Dashboards
Smart City data platforms and dashboards are becoming increasingly important. Data can be collected from various sources and displayed in a user-friendly way. Easily accessible URLs increase acceptance, while the ability to create your own dashboards reduces dependence on service providers and specialized software knowledge. Pre-installed standard services such as a climate protection info point and a defect reporting tool also encourage citizen participation.
- Our focus areas
- Visualization of data on configurable dashboards, which can be accessed via a landing page and specialized info cockpits.
- Use of modern web technologies such as React for an appealing design and FIWARE for efficient data management.
- Your benefits
- Increased public trust through public access to data.
- Current, structured data promotes quick decisions.
- Higher flexibility in customization allows for individual, specific solutions.
VR Fire Extinguisher Trainer 2.0
The VR Fire Extinguisher Trainer 2.0 project was developed in close collaboration with various fire academy schools to enable fire drills to be practiced realistically. The aim was to digitize a practical exercise using e-learning measures that conserve resources. With the help of our digital transformation consulting, fire academy schools were able to effectively integrate innovative technologies using a fire extinguisher training program. This enables them to efficiently practice emergency situations and ensure greater safety in the event of an actual emergency.
- Our focus areas
- Development of specific virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) training.
- Your benefits
- Routine wins through preconfigured fire scenarios and the development of instinctive action.
- Use the scenario manager to create individual use cases and rehearse rare exercises.
- As a digital solution, it offers a high degree of flexibility in terms of both time and location.
- Creation of a trainer interface to control the fire exercises and provide a detailed analysis, including a playback function.

Sustainable waste management
We are promoting the smart city with smart waste management by developing a concept for efficient waste disposal using data and dashboards.
- Our focus areas
- Selecting, installing and maintaining suitable sensors and gateways, and integrating them into the network.
- Using dashboards to get a simple view of fill levels.
- Implementing advanced web frameworks and backend systems for more efficient data processing and carry over.
- Your benefits
- Real-time overview of the situation in the urban area to empty full or overflowing waste and recyclables containers faster and in a more targeted manner.
- Increased resource efficiency thanks to a better overview of recyclables in the waste and targeted, sustainable recycling.
- Improvement of the cityscape through timely collections and clean public spaces.
- Reducing odors, improving hygiene and preventing pest infestation with the help of more effective waste management, especially when temperatures remain high for long periods.
- Involving citizen feedback to respond quickly to problems and increase resident satisfaction.
- Automated planning and optimization of collection trips based on the analysis of sensor data on fill levels and reports, for example, via defect reporters.
- Optimized route planning that takes challenging traffic conditions into account to avoid traffic jams and increase efficiency.
- Optimized deployment of planning and driving personnel despite an increasing shortage of personnel.
- Conservation of resources such as fuel and reduction of emissions through more efficient trips and fewer collections from containers that are not full.
