WHEELED & TRACKED
Wheeled and tracked vehicles – mobility and protection on any terrain
EDAG Group relies on networked development for maximum safety and efficiency
In an increasingly unstable geopolitical world, military wheeled and tracked vehicles are becoming more and more important in modern defense strategies. They have to meet the highest standards of protection, mobility and flexibility – while also remaining technologically up to date. The growing digitalization and complexity of vehicle architectures requires networked development processes in which simulation, software development and electronic systems play a central role.
- Holistic partner for system houses
For almost two decades, the EDAG Group has been a trusted engineering and production partner for international military system houses. We are familiar with the specific legal and technical conditions in the defense sector - from security clearance, export regulations and the War Weapons Control Act to NATO STANAG requirements, MIL standards, VG standards and TL guidelines. As a holistic development partner, we support our customers from the concept design to series development, including validation, to obsolescence management. In addition, we act as a series supplier for EE components and cable harnesses.
- Market opportunities: digitization, protective technologies, efficiency
Demand for highly mobile, protected wheeled and tracked vehicles is growing – both for multinational operations and for national defense. Pioneering technologies such as digital twins, AI-supported systems and virtual blast simulations are opening up new possibilities for developing vehicles that are safer, more efficient and more cost-effective. In the field of armor and protection systems, modern solutions provide precisely tailored protection against ballistic mines and IED threats – verified by realistic blast simulations, including tools such as IMPETUS Afea.
- Technological challenges: protection versus mobility
One of the key challenges remains the balance between protection level, weight and mobility. Modern armor must provide comprehensive ballistic protection, but must not restrict agility or range. At the same time, the requirements for modular platform concepts, system interoperability and compliance with international security and export standards are increasing.
Together, we develop wheeled and tracked vehicles that are optimally designed to meet the requirements of a wide range of operational environments – robust, connected and future-proof.

Use case: explosion and ballistics simulation for wheeled and tracked vehicles
- Initial situation:
When designing and developing wheeled and tracked vehicles, the structural integrity and compliance with permissible occupant loads must be ensured – in particular with regard to the effects of IEDs, blast and fragmentation charges, as well as mines in accordance with STANAG 4569.
- EDAG Group solution:
- Design of protection systems
- Assessment of the structural integrity of the overall system
- Analysis and minimization of the occupant loads that occur
- Evaluation of conversion kits, seat and restraint systems, and functional assemblies (e.g. flaps, doors, hatches)
- Bolt assessment according to VDI2230
- Strength verification according to FKM guideline
- Model construction for all common solvers
- Benefit for the customer:
- Fundierter Wissensaufbau für die Auslegung und Absicherung geschützter Rad- und Kettenfahrzeuge – mit Fokus auf die strukturelle Integrität und das Insassenschutzkonzept in realistischen Bedrohungsszenarien.
- Valide Nachweisführung für alle betrachteten Umfänge

New certification standard “VPAM ERV - Edition 3”
In the defense industry, security is of the utmost importance, and its requirements are regulated and guaranteed by special standards. A new certification standard, “VPAM ERV - Edition 3”, came into force at the beginning of 2021.
As an international engineering partner for armored vehicles, EDAG has developed an on-demand online session to illustrate the changes in both the evaluation and certification processes.
